Why Oppenheimer is a keenly awaited film

By: Priyal Joshi

The release of the film Oppenheimer is keenly awaited by movie buffs. It is directed and co written by Christopher Nolan, who has previously produced masterpieces like- Inception, Interstellar and Tenet. His direction and Cinematography has never disappointed viewers. He is undoubtedly one of the finest autuers of film directors of this generation. He has always strictly adhered to his principles. In todays times, when many directors are lured by the digital effects and CGI, Nolan still stands strong on his ground. Even when he does use CGI, he makes sure to not compromise on the element of realism. In this film, he’s recreated the Trinity test, world’s first nuclear weapon detonation.

The movie is based on true events. It cleaves closely to the facts of Robert Oppenheimer’s well documented life. He was an American theoretical physicist and is regarded as the father of atomic bomb. Nolan is exceptionally great at his craft, he has a distinct storytelling style- he likes to scramble hints in his stories, it’s nonlinear in writing structure. Just like how  Interstellar allows time-dilation and the warping of time-space to become the vehicle for more than one protagonist’s progression. Christopher Nolan continues to push the boundaries of cinematic experiences, solidifying his place as a maestro of intense and immersive storytelling.

Cillian Murphy, renowned for his role in Peaky Blinders is playing the lead role- Robert Oppenheimer. Matt Damon stars as Leslie Groves, lieutenant general in the US army and the director of the Manhattan project. Damon revealed a fascinating anecdote, sharing that he had planned to take a break from acting, but the opportunity to work with Nolan instantly changed his course. The stellar cast also includes Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife, Kitty, Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strass and Florence Pugh as Jean Tatlock.

As a movie shot entirely on 70mm film or 70mm IMAX film, Oppenheimer is available in a much higher resolution than others. Additionally, Nolan’s latest project also uses a new black-and-white IMAX film format that was developed specially for this movie by Kodak. It is used in certain scenes, and promises a true high-res black-and-white experience. As you might have guessed, this is far superior to scenes shot in colour and then digitally converted to black and white. It is a must watch in IMAX theatres.

As per reports, the film has sold over 2 lakh tickets in India alone. “Oppenheimer” would have shows at three in the morning. In Mumbai, IMAX screenings start as early as 12:01 in the morning, and tickets are already nearly completely gone. There are several IMAX cinemas in Mumbai that also provide early morning performances at 7:30 and 8:00 am and 3:00 and 3:30 am. Given the craze and the hype for the film, the tickets are being sold rapidly. Oppenheimer is set to hit theaters on July 21, 2023,
