The trailer of Vibe arrives with exactly the kind of infectious energy its title promises. Loud, lively and packed with punchlines, the preview immediately establishes itself as a commercial entertainer that doesn’t take itself too seriously. From its opening counting sequence, which draws humour from an instantly relatable everyday situation, the trailer wastes little time in getting into its comic groove.
What follows is a rapid-fire barrage of jokes, witty one-liners and comic situations, including a particularly amusing gag involving MBA full forms and a series of chaotic moments set against the vibrant backdrop of Bangkok. The humour is broad but never entirely devoid of cleverness, and the trailer maintains a brisk pace that keeps things moving from one gag to the next.
The biggest reason the trailer works, however, is Kunal Kemmu. Whether he is delivering a punchline, reacting to an absurd situation or simply occupying the frame, Kemmu commands attention. His comic timing remains one of his biggest strengths, but it is his animated expressions and complete commitment to the material that make him such an engaging screen presence. As an actor, writer and filmmaker, Kemmu has repeatedly demonstrated an instinct for comedy, and Vibe appears to give him ample opportunity to exploit it.
The supporting cast, which includes Laapataa Ladies breakout Sparsh Shrivastav, appears capable of holding its own, although the trailer is unmistakably Kemmu’s show. He gets the lion’s share of the memorable lines and consistently finds ways to turn even straightforward situations into comic moments.
The female lead certainly brings freshness and visual appeal to the proceedings, but the trailer doesn’t reveal enough about her character to determine how integral she is to the story. Whether she eventually emerges as a meaningful part of the narrative or primarily serves the film’s commercial packaging is something the theatrical release will have to answer.
Importantly, Vibe isn’t positioning itself as a straight comedy. The trailer attempts to offer a little bit of everything: comedy, action, patriotism and a generous dose of slick commercial spectacle. The energetic background score complements the visual pace, while the Bangkok setting adds an international flavour to what otherwise appears to be a quintessentially desi entertainer.
The only question is whether Vibe can sustain this momentum beyond its trailer. Comedy-heavy previews have a tendency to reveal their strongest punches upfront, and one hopes the film has enough surprises left in its arsenal. The real test will be whether the humour continues to land once the novelty of the trailer’s rapid-fire editing wears off.
For now, though, Vibe looks like a promising big-screen entertainer, particularly for audiences looking for something breezy, irreverent and packed with comic chaos. And if the trailer is any indication, Kunal Kemmu could be the film’s biggest attraction.
