Brown Review: Karisma Kapoor Deserves Better

Zee5's Brown wastes an interesting premise and a capable actress like Karisma Kapoor in a sluggish murder mystery that lacks thrills, tension and genuine suspense. Predictable and painfully slow, this crime drama struggles to hold attention.

A murder mystery is supposed to keep you on the edge of your seat. It should make you curious, excited and eager to know what happens next. Unfortunately, Zee5’s Brown does exactly the opposite. Despite having an intriguing premise and a talented actress like Karisma Kapoor leading the show, Brown turns out to be a painfully slow and underwhelming experience.

The biggest problem with Brown is that it lacks the very ingredients that make the whodunnit genre entertaining. There’s hardly any tension, very little thrill and almost no sense of urgency. The narrative moves at a sluggish pace, making the investigation feel more exhausting than engaging. Instead of drawing viewers deeper into the mystery, the show repeatedly tests their patience.

Karisma Kapoor undoubtedly has screen presence and has proven her acting abilities over the years. However, Brown gives her very little to work with. Her character spends most of the series looking depressed, rolling cigarettes and carrying emotional baggage. While flawed protagonists can be compelling, the writing fails to give her the flair, sharpness and charisma one expects from a compelling police officer. The result is a lead character who feels monotonous rather than fascinating.

A good crime thriller thrives on unpredictability. It constantly keeps viewers guessing. Sadly, Brown becomes fairly predictable after a point. The suspense lacks punch and the eventual revelations don’t land with the impact they should have. By the time the mystery unfolds, the excitement has already evaporated.

The supporting cast does its job reasonably well, and the series occasionally hints at becoming something more compelling. However, those moments are too few and far between to rescue the show from its sluggish storytelling.

What makes the disappointment greater is the potential on display. The premise had all the ingredients for a gripping crime drama, but the execution never rises above mediocrity. Instead of delivering a tense and riveting murder mystery, Brown settles for a slow-moving investigation that struggles to hold attention.

In the end, Brown is a reminder that a murder mystery cannot survive on atmosphere alone. It needs suspense, excitement, twists and genuine intrigue. Unfortunately, all those elements are largely missing here.

Bollywoodwallah Verdict: Karisma Kapoor deserved a better comeback vehicle. A slow, predictable and surprisingly dull murder mystery that never manages to generate the thrill its genre demands.
