Obsession Review: A Chilling Romance Gone Wrong ★★★½

A twisted romance-horror with stellar performances from Inde Navarrette and Michael Johnston. Gripping until the end—literally—where it stumbles.

Obsession, the breakout horror film from director Curry Barker, delivers a disturbing and emotionally gripping experience that examines the dark side of romantic desire. Released on May 15, 2026, this Focus Features production features compelling performances and an intelligent cautionary tale about the dangers of non-consensual love, though its conclusion doesn’t quite stick the landing.

A Twisted Love Story

The film follows Bear (Michael Johnston), a music store employee who wishes for his childhood friend and co-worker Nikki (Inde Navarrette) to fall in love with him using a mysterious supernatural trinket called the “One Wish Willow”. What begins as a dream come true quickly transforms into a nightmarish scenario when Nikki becomes unnaturally obsessed with Bear, losing her own identity in the process.

Standout Performances

Inde Navarrette delivers a truly star-making performance that carries the film’s emotional weight. Her portrayal of Nikki’s transformation from a normal person into someone possessed by obsessive love is both heartbreaking and terrifying, complete with haunting screams that linger long after the credits roll. Michael Johnston effectively captures Bear’s journey from hopeless romantic to horrified victim of his own wishes.

Where It Falls Short

While the first two acts are masterfully crafted, the ending feels somewhat unsatisfying and leaves too many questions unanswered. The film’s 108-minute runtime becomes indulgent in the final act, and the resolution—while emotionally powerful—doesn’t provide the closure the story deserves. Despite this flaw, Obsession remains a must-watch horror experience that showcases Curry Barker as a filmmaker to watch.

Rating: ★★★½ (3.5/5)
